I am trying to avoid stepping again into the minefield, but I will not 
have a peaceful evening unless I know the reason why you have an 
external RTC in lieu of using the one provided by the STM CPU.

Is this also done to reduce the attack surface, although an adversary 
who can subvert a CPU-based RTC can just as easily subvert the external 
chip through the I2C channel?
