I've looked at the FT232R. One thing I don't like with the chip is that
it has an EEPROM programmable from the host side. And changing values in
the EEPROM affects the USB as well as the serial interface functionality.
The FT232H does not have internal EEPROM and is actually a simpler chip
even though it supports UART as well as a few other serial interfaces
(I2C, SPI or general FIFO). The performance is also a bit better when
used as UART interface.
