I haven't looked at Verilator for a long time. A few years ago it was
fairly simplistic. But that might have changed considerably. Having
multiple tools is a really good thing - they always find different bugs.

I'm currently using the following compilers/simulators:

Icarus Verilog: http://iverilog.icarus.com/
Not superfast but open and Steven is actively developing the tool and is
good fixing bugs and/or integrating fixes provided.

ModelSim. There are versions of this commercial tool available at no
cost from Altera. It is limited in how big designs you can simulate. But
the Cryptech TRNG which are may kLOC is no problems.

Then of course I use Xilinx ISE and Altera Quartus for synthesis etc.
