Nice! If you want low cost, look at the STM32L0x chips based on Cortex
M0+. Really compact. Also the mbed dev system is really cool. It really
is zero admin time to start coding for the MCU. And it works on Windows,
OSX, Linux. I've tried and it works.

A good alternative to Arduino with much better selection of devices.

Downloading a new firmware is as easy as throwing the file into the
USB-memory the MCU presents itself as to the host system. And yes, I've
tried to put a huge document there instead. It didn't brick the device. ;-)
