Yes. Std practice (at least should be) in both HW and SW development.
Regression tests, unit tests, buildbots and baselines. I try to use it
as much as possible. If you look at the testbenches for the hash cores
they are all self testing with known answer tests. Then they should have
a lot of other unit tests for flags, size variations etc.

G-d no! Are anybody using expect nowadays? Big thing pre 2000 in ASIC
development, esp in combination with Tcl.
