maybe the question is not so much why it is designed the way it is,
though that might be intellectually interesting, but rather how to code
to that design.  

one of the nice things about novena is that everything is open source.
can't you look at the eim code for the romulator in
http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=4297 or one of the other projects?

but paul shatov's suggestion seemed to this naïve ear to be pertinent.

and, btw, bunnie is very responsive to at least my begging emails.
